BOF Centrifugally Cast Lance Tips

Tallman Technologies produces BOF lance tips by using a proprietary and unique centrifugal casting grain refinement method. This results in a monolithic lance tip with the combination of unprecedented jet precision and outstanding wear characteristics, both of which have been proven to provide excellent refining performance and increased lance tip life.

Tallman Technologies BOF lance tips also contain our patented SWIRL COOL technology. Using computer based computational fluid dynamic models, the internal geometry of the lance tip is designed to maximize water cooling efficiency, which further prolongs lance tip life.

Tallman Technologies has adapted the latest supersonic jet technology from NASA and the aerospace industry specifically for the unique requirements of high temperature steelmaking process. Together with our centrifugal casting technology and our state of the art 6 axis CNC machine, our complex geometry lance tips offer unprecedented precision and efficiency, which leads to improved steelmaking performance and yield

Secondary Oxygen Distributor Lances (SD Lance)

Tallman Technologies’ Secondary Oxygen Distributor Lances are custom designed to distribute oxygen to the freeboard of the BOF. Using secondary oxygen allows the steelmaker to reduce (or even eliminate) lance skulling, better control the converter profile and mouth build-up and in some cases, stretch hot metal usage and increase scrap consumption.

CleanLance

Tallman Technologies’ CleanLance is specifically designed to address lance skulling in the BOF. By installing a secondary oxygen distributor on the existing oxygen lance, exothermic reactions are used to prevent lance skulling.

Benefits:

  • Improved safety by dramatically reducing and even eliminating lance skull formation
  • Increased working time by reducing lance cleaning and maintenance
  • Reduces slopping and improves refractory consumption
  • Lowers the total Iron in slag
  • Faster heat times from the increased heat generated through decarburization of the high iron droplets in the slag and through post combustion of CO to CO2 in the off-gas
  • Combine with the patent pending Tallman TrueLance™ Internal Lance Support System (ILSS) for unsurpassed reliability
  • Can be used in all converters (LD, LBE, etc.)
    • No change to blowing practices (oxygen flow rate, lance height, etc.)
    • Total oxygen per heat does not change
    • Little or no change in CO recovery
    • Metallurgical results unchanged

KoneKleener

Tallman Technologies’ KoneKleener is specifically designed to address mouth and cone build-up in the BOF. By installing a secondary oxygen distributor on the existing oxygen lance, exothermic reactions are used to prevent build-up in the cone and mouth of the converter and to make build-up that does occur easier to remove.

Benefits:

  • Reduced down time by reducing maintenance in the cone and mouth areas of the converter
  • Improved performance and increased working volume
  • Reduces slopping and improves refractory consumption
  • Lowers the total iron in slag
  • Faster heat times from the increased heat generated through decarburization of the high iron droplets in the slag and through post combustion of CO to CO2 in the off-gas
  • Combine with the patent pending Tallman TrueLance™ Internal Lance Support System (ILSS) for unsurpassed reliability
  • Can be used in all converters (LD, LBE, etc.)

Sub-Lance Tips

Tallman Technologies' Sub-Lance Tips are designed for long life. We optimize the cooling design to reduce skull build up the tip and have the ability to apply hard weld overlay material to the inside probe mating surface which provides a stronger and more durable contact area.

Post Combustion Lance Tips

The Tallman Technologies designed Post Combustion lance tip can provide proven performance improvements to the BOF process. Post combustion can increase the amount of scrap usage in the charge, while reducing the amount of lance skull and build-up in the cone section. Through production experience, Tallman Bronze can custom design a Post Combustion Lance Tip to the process requirements and constraints which will provide improved melting performance in the vessel. Tallman Bronze offers Post Combustion lance tips in either a fabricated or cast design. Each with its own respective advantages.

SWIRL COOL Technology:

To optimize lance tip life, Tallman Technologies has developed a patented SWIRL COOL™ cooling system for BOF lance tips and specific designs of EAF lance tips. The more evenly distributed cooling profile and improved heat transfer from the copper lance tip to the cooling water reduces the wear between the ports. Longer lance tip life and efficiency will also be achieved by retarding the erosion of the exit port.

Using computer based computational fluid dynamic models, the internal geometry of the lance tip is designed to maximize water cooling efficiency, prolonging the life of the tip.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Tallman Technologies employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in order visualize and predict how liquid flows through our products. This allows us to optimize the cooling efficiency of a particular design and predict the effectiveness of any modifications.

Calorizing Lance Tips

Calorizing creates a protective barrier on the copper casting that prevents liquid iron drips from penetrating the surface and casing "bullet holes".

Calorizing is a pack diffusion process where the copper casting is placed in a sealed retort containing aluminum powder. The casting is heated and aluminum is diffused into the surface, creating a copper aluminide inner layer and an aluminum oxide outer layer.

The Coating is diffused into the copper thereby creating a perfect bond with the copper substrate. The thickness of the coating is approximately 1 mm and consists of three layers:

  1. An outer layer of Aluminum Oxide
  2. A thick middle layer consisting of intermetallics in Cu-Al matrix
  3. A thin uniform Cu-Al diffusion layer at the interface
